The London new wavers are back touring their much anticipated second album “The Optimist”. The follow up to 2007’s “Fantastic Playroom” comes out March 1st.

Exploring the limitless possibilities of the traditional Japanese drum, the taiko, KODO are forging new directions for a vibrant living art-form. Inspired by their recent creative explorations, the cast of seven men and five women will deliver a potent selection of Kodo's vast repertoire distilled to its core essentials. This phenomenal group of Drummers captivates audiences worldwide with their unique combination of dynamic drumming, exquisite musicianship and pure theatre. Nearly three decades since its founding, Kodo is still seeking new directions and inspiration, both on the world stage and in the fabric of daily life.

 

Over the years, the Avett Brothers built up a sizable following based on their rowdy, infectious stage shows. In concert, the high-flying ensemble tears through tunes with unbridled energy, popping banjo and guitar strings right and left while inciting stomping singalongs among audiences that appear to know every word. At times they would seemingly create their own subgenre onstage - “punkgrass,” for lack of a better word. This much is for certain: the Avett Brothers are a grassroots phenomenon, built from the ground up. I and Love and You marks the point at which they’re poised, with perfect timing, to break through to a broader audience.

Artist’s Proof is an exhibition by 24 Irish and international fine art printmaking artists. Visitors will be able to see the creative methodology of the printmaker showing the development of the idea from the research and exploration stages through to the rigorous process of making the print, requiring great technical skill. The prints will be displayed alongside two working proofs to provide a glimpse of how it was made.

 

Between Metaphor and Object features a range of works from the IMMA Collection, primarily sculptures and installation works from the 1990s. It provides perspectives on the diversity of practice that is represented in the IMMA Collection from this period, explores its particularities, and considers them in the context of international trends of the decade. The title of the exhibition references perceived polarities in art since the 1960s and also proposes the idea of the continuous flux visited upon artworks in the mind of the viewer between symbolism and objecthood. Notably the exhibition incorporates a number of pieces from the Weltkunst Collection, which is on loan to IMMA since 1994. This significant collection of British sculpture and drawings of the 1980s and ‘90s will return to the Weltkunst Foundation in 2010 and the exhibition acknowledges the generous loan of these works.

 

After an exhilarating 6 hour Broken Bus Driver Movement DJ set at DEAF '09 back in October, Carlow boys TR-One (Fine Art Recordings / Nice & Nasty / Pogo Recordings) team up with Louis Scully (Discotekken / 12Sundays) to do it all again in the Twisted Pepper Mezz this March 13th. TR-One have been gaining major kudos internationally over the last few years with their releases being held in high regard by DJs across the globe (quotes at bottom of this mail). While also highly adept at the ol' DJing, their DJ gigs have seen them play all over Ireland, as well as landing a slot at Airbound Festival in Croatia last year alongside the likes of Ben Klock, Marcel Dettman & Nathan Fake. Louis Scully, their partner for the night, also played at Airbound festival & has been busy promoting Discotekken & DJing around Dublin for various promoters this past year, along with his residency at 12 Sundays.

 

With live musical accompaniment by Stephen Horne. They say: "The documentary Grass was one of the first films to sell out at last year’s festival and certainly one of the highlights of the programme. This year we have Chang by the same adventurous film-making team of Cooper and Schoedsack, that would later go on to make King Kong. This film was to all extensive purposes lost for the best part of forty five years and was only rediscovered relatively recently. Shot on location in Siam, it traces the story of a small family living on the outskirts of a wild jungle. The film is an early documentary classic with all the thrills of a blockbuster, watch out for those elephants!"

We often imagine dinosaurs as colossal flesh-eating beasts that lived on our planet for an incredible 160 million years. Some were indeed gigantic, but many were only as heavy as a Labrador dog and many were vegetarian! Did you know that the Ornithomimus could run faster than an Olympic sprinter? See how the sociable Triceratops lived in herds, caring for and protecting their young. Meet Dilophosaurus, a relative of the first dinosaur found in Scotland. Come face to face with the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the fiercest land predators ever known. This massive animatronic model, 4 metres tall and 7 metres long, is so lifelike you’ll think it’s the real thing! Walk past the head of a hungry Tyrannosaurus and watch as his terrifying jaws go SNAP!

Oatlands College in association with Sion Hill present ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, a rock musical by composer Alan Menken and writer Howard Ashman. Featuring a cast of 70 transition year students from both schools, ‘Little Shop of Horrors’ tells the tale of a hapless florist shop worker, Seymore Krelborn, who raises a plant that feeds on human blood! The musical includes several show stoppers including ‘Skid Row’, ‘Somewhere that’s Green’ and ‘Suddenly Seymour’.

 

 

Over a seven week period well known artist and sculptor Cris Neumann will facilitate the creation of 3D works by Coolmine and Hartstown Community School students in a project that will be a fun reflection of Vodafone Ireland’s Green Agenda Policy. This educational and environmentally innovative visual arts project will explore the concepts of communication, mobility and technology and how these concepts can work in the reduction and recycling of waste. The most important thing to know about the rock trio Retribution Gospel Choir is that they are likely the most physically fit band on Earth. Drummer Eric Pollard is a distance swimmer, and Ultimate Frisbee champion with state basketball credentials. Bassist Steve Garrington also dazzles on the court, but it's his long-distance running skills that mark him a champion. Alan Sparhawk, who plays guitar and sings, has extensive experience in American football, has been scouted for coaching work and stays fit as a distance trail runner and member of the band Low. Certainly, this trio would destroy any other band in a 10k race, and then still do the gig.

Australian artists Pat Foster and Jen Berean have opened a new exhibition to coincide with their international studio residency.

 

 

 

This is an experimental exhibition which attempts to addresses the question of what happens when artworks become part of a collection and are subsequently shown in many different contexts. Working from a potential list of works, the artworks will be changed during the course of the exhibition, with removal of artworks generating absences which call to mind gaps in our memory and point to the partially hidden nature of Museum collections. Additions of works will draw out new and perhaps unexpected associations, and new narratives will emerge within the overall structure of the exhibition. Other strategies such as repositioning works within the exhibition will be used to alter the pace of the exhibition. A list of these potential works will not be disclosed in advance.

Based on Frank Wedekind’s masterpiece of German symbolism Spring Awakening, Christ Deliver Us! is a play about how hard and how wonderful it can be to grow up during a period of Irish History that we can never again look back on with nostalgia. Dave Rooney is a multi instrumentalist, singer/songwriter hailing from Dublin. A passionate musician, he has gigged across Europe for 15 years.

 

Ladlane formed in 2004 in Dublin. The band features Eugene Quinn from Templeogue, Dublin on guitar/banjo/vocals, Ray Dempsey from Ballyduff, Co. Waterford on accordion and Colm Keane from somewhere in north county Dublin on fiddle/vocals.
