Emergenza is the world's biggest festival for unsigned bands, with an average of 6,000 bands participating every year in 200 different cities all over the world. Every year the national finalists gets to spend three days in Germany at the Taubertal Open Air festival, where the world final takes place, with an average of 30,000 people showing up over the weekend. This is where, every year, the best band wins a professional production for their first album and where plenty of other musicians are rewarder for their skills with prizes from the festival's sponsors.

After leaving college, Ó Briain began working at RTÉ as a children's TV presenter. At this time he also began performing his first stand-up gigs on the Irish comedy circuit. He admitted, "I did the trip from Donegal to Dublin to play to six people; then I turned round and drove home again. I did about three or four years playing to a lot of bad rooms, but learning as I went. It's not bad when someone gives you 40 quid for standing up and telling jokes. I remember thinking: 'This is the life.'"

	This event is part of the Temple Bar TradFest festival.
It was the renowned BBC DJ John Peel who in 1972 gave Finbar Furey and his brother Eddie their big break by voting their combination of uilleann pipes and guitar as act of the year. When the younger brothers Paul and George joined the fold, several years later, The Fureys enjoyed a string of best-selling records all over the world. With Finbar as lead singer, songs such as ‘When You Were Sweet Sixteen’, ‘Leaving Nancy’, ‘Green Fields of France’, ‘Red Rose Café’ and ‘The Lonesome Boatman’ established them as one of the most popular acts to come out of Ireland. They became one of the first Irish folk groups to play on Top of the Pops.

Their near constant touring has earned them a fiercely loyal fan-base, developed by penning consistently intelligent, distinctive songs, and delivering them through a captivating live show. After one appearance before a massive summer festival crowd, Buffalo News rock critic Jeff Miers declared them a 'a gimmickless band, able to generate feverish excitement both on the stage and in the studio.'

The National Gallery of Ireland's famous Vaughan collection of watercolours by JMW Turner (1775-1851) will be on display for the month of January. It includes Turner's most striking works in watercolour painted during his later European tours: the Doge's Palace in Venice, Lake Lucerne, and the fortresses at Bellinzona in Switzerland. This year the exhibition will be complemented by a display of seventeenth-, eight eenth- and nineteenth-century silhouettes and miniatures from the Mary A. McNeill Bequest, comprising works by John Comerford, Richard Crosse and William Grimaldi.

Between Metaphor and Object features a range of works from the IMMA Collection, primarily sculptures and installation works from the 1990s. It provides perspectives on the diversity of practice that is represented in the IMMA Collection from this period, explores its particularities, and considers them in the context of international trends of the decade. The title of the exhibition references perceived polarities in art since the 1960s and also proposes the idea of the continuous flux visited upon artworks in the mind of the viewer between symbolism and objecthood. Notably the exhibition incorporates a number of pieces from the Weltkunst Collection, which is on loan to IMMA since 1994. This significant collection of British sculpture and drawings of the 1980s and ‘90s will return to the Weltkunst Foundation in 2010 and the exhibition acknowledges the generous loan of these works.

Comedian Brendan O'Carroll is bringing Mrs Brown to the BBC in a new TV series. A pilot show was filmed in front of a live audience in Scotland in October and will be screened by RTE, which is involved in the production, over the Christmas period. The BBC will also show the pilot later next year ahead of the screening of all six episodes.

We often imagine dinosaurs as colossal flesh-eating beasts that lived on our planet for an incredible 160 million years. Some were indeed gigantic, but many were only as heavy as a Labrador dog and many were vegetarian! Did you know that the Ornithomimus could run faster than an Olympic sprinter? See how the sociable Triceratops lived in herds, caring for and protecting their young. Meet Dilophosaurus, a relative of the first dinosaur found in Scotland. Come face to face with the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the fiercest land predators ever known. This massive animatronic model, 4 metres tall and 7 metres long, is so lifelike you’ll think it’s the real thing! Walk past the head of a hungry Tyrannosaurus and watch as his terrifying jaws go SNAP!

Lorcan McDonnell AKA 'Lorcan Mak' was born in 1989 in Dublin. He began DJing in 2002 and first took an interest in producing around the year 2004. His love for music began at an early age, experimenting with many musical instruments as a child. But in the end he chose the computer as his way to create music. Self taught in most industry standard DAWs (Digital Audio Workstations), Lorcan is renowned for his super clean, Techno Fuelled, House productions and his sub crushing DJ sets.

This is an experimental exhibition which attempts to addresses the question of what happens when artworks become part of a collection and are subsequently shown in many different contexts. Working from a potential list of works, the artworks will be changed during the course of the exhibition, with removal of artworks generating absences which call to mind gaps in our memory and point to the partially hidden nature of Museum collections. Additions of works will draw out new and perhaps unexpected associations, and new narratives will emerge within the overall structure of the exhibition. Other strategies such as repositioning works within the exhibition will be used to alter the pace of the exhibition. A list of these potential works will not be disclosed in advance.
