Taking their name from the 1998 Chinese film Xiu Xiu: The Send Down Girl, post-punk throwbacks Xiu Xiu were formed in San Jose, California.

 

 

It’s a funny old world when seen through the eyes of Brendan Grace. The sanctimonious priest who knows more than he’s telling: ‘’Blessed is he who gets married in the nick of time’’. The father of the bride makes a speech at his daughters wedding: ‘’She could have married someone with money; she could have married someone who was working. She could have married someone who wasn’t working but was willing to work.’’ Then there’s the schoolboy with the unspeakable personal habits and a fine line in sympathy pleas. Brendan Grace is all of these and more. Each cock- eyed portrait he paints has a ring of truth that brings audiences to the point of apoplexy. Brendan’s material owes more to the best of the traditional stand-up-comics than it does to modern alternative humour and his show is very much a show for all the family. There is a sincerity about his act that endears you to him, and his off-stage persona is very much a ‘man of the people’ as he makes himself available after each show for a photo and a ‘meet and greet’. We anticipate Brendan’s first visit to the Mill Theatre will be a sell-out so early booking advisable.

 

 

This show heralds a return for Jon to the type of work that made his reputation as one of the most talented comedians in Ireland. Jon uses the changing face of contemporary Ireland as the scaffoldon which to build his hilarious observations and characters. Running through such contrasting experiences as supporting Munster rugby to visiting a health spa, Kenny takes no prisoners and delights in emphasizing the humour in everyday life. ‘This was not your typical stand-up comedic act looking for cheap laughs out of cheap shots at anybody in particular. This show , all two hours of it , was his take on life, his life and judging by the warm response of the audience, one that resonated with many others....This was Jon Kenny at his best. Artist’s Proof is an exhibition by 24 Irish and international fine art printmaking artists. Visitors will be able to see the creative methodology of the printmaker showing the development of the idea from the research and exploration stages through to the rigorous process of making the print, requiring great technical skill. The prints will be displayed alongside two working proofs to provide a glimpse of how it was made.

Between Metaphor and Object features a range of works from the IMMA Collection, primarily sculptures and installation works from the 1990s. It provides perspectives on the diversity of practice that is represented in the IMMA Collection from this period, explores its particularities, and considers them in the context of international trends of the decade. The title of the exhibition references perceived polarities in art since the 1960s and also proposes the idea of the continuous flux visited upon artworks in the mind of the viewer between symbolism and objecthood. Notably the exhibition incorporates a number of pieces from the Weltkunst Collection, which is on loan to IMMA since 1994. This significant collection of British sculpture and drawings of the 1980s and ‘90s will return to the Weltkunst Foundation in 2010 and the exhibition acknowledges the generous loan of these works.

Come face to face with the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the fiercest land predators ever known. This massive animatronic model, 4 metres tall and 7 metres long, is so lifelike you’ll think it’s the real thing! Walk past the head of a hungry Tyrannosaurus and watch as his terrifying jaws go SNAP!

 

Donna Marie Dunne is a Dublin based singer/songwriter. After several years singing in a covers band touring Ireland with television appearances and radio sessions, she decided to start writing original songs and develop her own style of music. The songs featured on this profile are demos that have been recorded over the past few months. A recent support slot for Luan Parle in April raised plenty of interest in her talent as a singer and lyricist. With a huge mixture of influences from soul, country, blues, jazz and rock, her powerful voice can transcend each genre with ease.

 

Saturday night sees two of the city's finest mixologists at work over both floors. Goldy - a legendary tecnician - literally takes the roof off the bar with serious good mixing skills and a wide bag of tunes. Gaviscom takes care of the club with plenty of mash-ups, breaks and the odd random Fleetwood Mac tune.

Over a seven week period well known artist and sculptor Cris Neumann will facilitate the creation of 3D works by Coolmine and Hartstown Community School students in a project that will be a fun reflection of Vodafone Ireland’s Green Agenda Policy. This educational and environmentally innovative visual arts project will explore the concepts of communication, mobility and technology and how these concepts can work in the reduction and recycling of waste. This is an experimental exhibition which attempts to addresses the question of what happens when artworks become part of a collection and are subsequently shown in many different contexts. Working from a potential list of works, the artworks will be changed during the course of the exhibition, with removal of artworks generating absences which call to mind gaps in our memory and point to the partially hidden nature of Museum collections. Additions of works will draw out new and perhaps unexpected associations, and new narratives will emerge within the overall structure of the exhibition. Other strategies such as repositioning works within the exhibition will be used to alter the pace of the exhibition. A list of these potential works will not be disclosed in advance.

 

Yesterday’s Tomorrow Today is an exhibition of new works by Leslie Cullinan and Helena O’Connor. Both artists work collaboratively to examine notions of time through video installation, sculpture and drawings in pencil and ink.

And why? The young heroes of Thomas Kilroy’s urgent new play strive to carve out an understanding of the world beneath the unbearable weight of unanswered questions, confusion and their own desires. And the clergy gather like crows on the horizon. Based on Frank Wedekind’s masterpiece of German symbolism Spring Awakening, Christ Deliver Us! is a play about how hard and how wonderful it can be to grow up during a period of Irish History that we can never again look back on with nostalgia. An Abbey Theatre commision

Kay’s got an itch that Gem can’t scratch (but maybe Kermit can). Paul is just using Amber until he can get to Australia. The Hairy Man fancies Lorraine but fails to rise to the occasion, and Gem doesn’t like the neighbours coming in to ‘mind’ him. And if all that wasn’t bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and…well…life is never the same again.

 

Ladlane formed in 2004 in Dublin. The band features Eugene Quinn from Templeogue, Dublin on guitar/banjo/vocals, Ray Dempsey from Ballyduff, Co. Waterford on accordion and Colm Keane from somewhere in north county Dublin on fiddle/vocals.
