Purportedly the uncle of Tricky and the brother of prominent guitar sideman Caleb Quaye. Four years after his critically acclaimed debut "Maverick A Stroke", Quaye resurfaced with "Vanguard".

 

Her debut album Slow Dynamo was named Irish Album of the Year in the Irish Independent, and her video for 'Punches' was championed by none other than rap giant Kanye West. It then won IMTV's Video of the Year. Valerie is currently nominated for Best Irish Female in this year's Meteor Awards, and her album Slow Dynamo is nominated for the Choice Music Prize.

 

Codes are an indie electronic quartet from Dublin, Ireland consisting of Daragh Anderson, Eoin Stephens, Paul Reilly and Raymond Hogge. The band was formed in mid 2007 and within a couple of months had two singles - "Edith" and "This is Goodbye" - enter the Irish Top 40 at #39 and #32 respectively. The single "Guided by Ghosts" was released on 10 October, coinciding with a show in The Button Factory, Dublin. The band began work on their debut album with Manic Street Preachers producer, Greg Haver in Modern World Studios, Cotswolds in late 2008. The album is expected to be released in the mid-end of 2009.

In addition, this year, a jury that this year includes John Maguire (Sunday Business Post), Paul Lynch (Sunday Tribune), George Byrne (Evening Herald), Donald Clarke (Irish Times) and DFCC president Tara Brady (Hot Press) will announce the recipient of the inaugural Michael Dwyer Discovery Award, named after our late friend and colleague. TV stars and DFCC members Taragh Loughrey Grant (RTÉ) and Mike Sheridan (Entertainment.ie) will be on hand to introduce the final deliberations of the 2010 jury from 6.30 pm on 27th February at the IFI.

'Land Poisened’ is an exhibition of new work by Sligo artist Colm Rooney. His work draws on personal and social histories, mythology and photography. Rooney is a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork and more recently a graduate of the Music and Media Technology Masters in Trinity College Dublin.

Artist’s Proof is an exhibition by 24 Irish and international fine art printmaking artists. Visitors will be able to see the creative methodology of the printmaker showing the development of the idea from the research and exploration stages through to the rigorous process of making the print, requiring great technical skill. The prints will be displayed alongside two working proofs to provide a glimpse of how it was made.

 

 

Between Metaphor and Object features a range of works from the IMMA Collection, primarily sculptures and installation works from the 1990s. It provides perspectives on the diversity of practice that is represented in the IMMA Collection from this period, explores its particularities, and considers them in the context of international trends of the decade. The title of the exhibition references perceived polarities in art since the 1960s and also proposes the idea of the continuous flux visited upon artworks in the mind of the viewer between symbolism and objecthood. Notably the exhibition incorporates a number of pieces from the Weltkunst Collection, which is on loan to IMMA since 1994. This significant collection of British sculpture and drawings of the 1980s and ‘90s will return to the Weltkunst Foundation in 2010 and the exhibition acknowledges the generous loan of these works.

 

Joining Celine on stage will be Jerry Fehily (Drums.. ex Hothouse Flowers), Johnny Campbell (Bass) Paul Seymour (Keys) Siobhan Lennon (BVs). Having served her time in various bands, including the acclaimed Mississippi Mermaids, Dubliner Celine now swims in solo waters. Her music has been described from soft-jazz to damn fine acoustic soul, with shades of Burt Bacharach, Carole King & Paul McCartney. "A night of Pure Melody and Laid-Back Grooves guaranteed..."

 

With his customary grace and skill, acclaimed Irish documentary maker Desmond Bell has mixed early cinema archive film and new material to retrace the story of navvy poet, novelist, dramatist and screenwriter Patrick MacGill. Born in 1889 into crushing poverty in Donegal in the west of Ireland, MacGill went on to become one of Ireland’s most successful authors. His autobiographical novels penned in Scotland and hugely popular at the time, paint a vibrant picture of the life of the navvy, the labourer and the whore, “the outcasts of a mighty industrial society”. MacGill lived the life of a navvy in the Scottish highlands and in his writing fact and fiction, social report and love story mingle. Director Bell, alongside his collaborator Stephen Rea has fashioned an elegant and engaging portrait, while also interrogating the basic principals by which biographies are told and retold. Director Desmond Bell will be in attendance at this screening

We often imagine dinosaurs as colossal flesh-eating beasts that lived on our planet for an incredible 160 million years. Some were indeed gigantic, but many were only as heavy as a Labrador dog and many were vegetarian! Did you know that the Ornithomimus could run faster than an Olympic sprinter? See how the sociable Triceratops lived in herds, caring for and protecting their young. Meet Dilophosaurus, a relative of the first dinosaur found in Scotland. Come face to face with the mighty Tyrannosaurus rex, one of the fiercest land predators ever known. This massive animatronic model, 4 metres tall and 7 metres long, is so lifelike you’ll think it’s the real thing! Walk past the head of a hungry Tyrannosaurus and watch as his terrifying jaws go SNAP!

Goldy - a legendary tecnician - literally takes the roof off the bar with serious good mixing skills and a wide bag of tunes. Gaviscom takes care of the club with plenty of mash-ups, breaks and the odd random Fleetwood Mac tune.

Over a seven week period well known artist and sculptor Cris Neumann will facilitate the creation of 3D works by Coolmine and Hartstown Community School students in a project that will be a fun reflection of Vodafone Ireland’s Green Agenda Policy. This educational and environmentally innovative visual arts project will explore the concepts of communication, mobility and technology and how these concepts can work in the reduction and recycling of waste. After a sell out show in November, The Kings of Cabaret are back for a second show. The Kings of Cabaret are all fantastic entertainers in their chosen field. Linda Martin won The Eurovision Song Contest for Ireland in 1992. She has been a judge on You're A Star and has just finished starring in Robin Hood at The Olympia. Linda Martin will perform all her classic Eurovision hits including her winning song, Why Me? from 1992.Sean Dunphy was Ireland’s first Eurovision superstar and Noel V Ginnity is one of Ireland’s foremost comedians. All of them have risen to the top of their profession and each of them is a King of Cabaret. Sean Dunphy will perform all his hits including If I Could Choose, The Lonely Woods of Upton, Two Loves and many more.

 

The Norma Breen Stage Academy presents an energetic and fast-moving evening of song and dance, showcasing the children's talents with well known celebrity guests, in aid of the Cystic Fibrosis Hopesource Foundation. The aim of this family friendly evening is to have fun and raise funds for CF Hopesource, specifically for the CF out-patient facility at Temple St Children's Hospital. Australian artists Pat Foster and Jen Berean have opened a new exhibition to coincide with their international studio residency.

 

After selling out last year ‘Waiting for IKEA’ is back for the last time ever in an extended and even better version. Set in the heart of ‘new’ Dublin, Pimlico where night wear is day wear and bitching is everywhere. Pimlico Flats is akin to Cheers where everybody knows your name, your business, your record and what you are having for dinner. Nothing much changes in Pimlico, each day begins and ends the same; it’s what happens in between that keeps the neighbours gossiping. The Celtic Tiger has been and gone and they never even stroked it. Recession! What’s da? A new fragrance from Calvin Klein?

 

This is an experimental exhibition which attempts to addresses the question of what happens when artworks become part of a collection and are subsequently shown in many different contexts. Working from a potential list of works, the artworks will be changed during the course of the exhibition, with removal of artworks generating absences which call to mind gaps in our memory and point to the partially hidden nature of Museum collections. Additions of works will draw out new and perhaps unexpected associations, and new narratives will emerge within the overall structure of the exhibition. Other strategies such as repositioning works within the exhibition will be used to alter the pace of the exhibition. A list of these potential works will not be disclosed in advance.

And why? The young heroes of Thomas Kilroy’s urgent new play strive to carve out an understanding of the world beneath the unbearable weight of unanswered questions, confusion and their own desires. And the clergy gather like crows on the horizon. Based on Frank Wedekind’s masterpiece of German symbolism Spring Awakening, Christ Deliver Us! is a play about how hard and how wonderful it can be to grow up during a period of Irish History that we can never again look back on with nostalgia. An Abbey Theatre commision

Kay’s got an itch that Gem can’t scratch (but maybe Kermit can). Paul is just using Amber until he can get to Australia. The Hairy Man fancies Lorraine but fails to rise to the occasion, and Gem doesn’t like the neighbours coming in to ‘mind’ him. And if all that wasn’t bad enough, Little Gem makes his presence felt and…well…life is never the same again.

 

Ladlane formed in 2004 in Dublin. The band features Eugene Quinn from Templeogue, Dublin on guitar/banjo/vocals, Ray Dempsey from Ballyduff, Co. Waterford on accordion and Colm Keane from somewhere in north county Dublin on fiddle/vocals.
